How Does Six Month Smiles Work?

Patient smiling with tooth-colored brackets and wires
Six Month Smiles is a revolutionary orthodontic treatment that starts like every other smile-enhancing service: with a consultation. At this visit, Dr. Stokes will learn a bit more about your dental history and smile goals before conducting an oral exam. Then, he can determine if you’re a candidate and, if you are, walk you through the process, create a custom treatment plan, and answer any questions you have.

If you decide to move forward with Six Month Smiles, then clear brackets and tooth-colored archwires will be securely bonded to your teeth, which will apply just enough pressure to move the ones in your smile zone into ideal alignment. At the end of your treatment, we will provide you with a retainer to preserve your results for decades to come!

What Issues Does Six Month Smiles Address?

For that reason, it’s perfect for patients who want to close the gap between their two front teeth or fix overcrowding on their bottom teeth that show when they laugh. If you’re interested in learning more about the orthodontic problems this discreet treatment can address, get in touch with us – we’d be happy to answer any questions you have!

Benefits of Six Month Smiles

Patient looking at reflection in handheld mirror Let’s start with one of the biggest benefits: the average case length, like the name implies, is only six months! Patients also opt for this orthodontic treatment because the clear brackets and tooth-colored wires make your braces barely noticeable. Finally, there are fewer office visits (only one every month or so), which saves you time and money.

Six Month Smiles FAQs

Does Treatment Really Only Take Six Months?

The vast majority of our patients are able to complete their treatment within six months. In a select few cases, the severity of a patient’s orthodontic issues takes a bit longer (or shorter!) to fix. Rest assured, the main goal behind this type of treatment is to straighten visible teeth as quickly as possible. During your consultation, Dr. Stokes will thoroughly examine your pearly whites and let you know how long you can expect your orthodontic treatment to take.

Who’s a Good Candidate for Six Month Smiles?

Most adults with healthy teeth and gums are good candidates for Six Month Smiles. This treatment is ideal for those with mild to moderate cosmetic dental alignment issues, such as crowded teeth and overly wide gaps. It’s also an excellent solution if your pearly whites slid back out of place after previously receiving orthodontic treatment.

It’s worth emphasizing that good oral health is a must. Cavities, gum disease, and other harmful conditions could cause your Six Month Smiles to fail, so it really is best to take care of these issues beforehand.

Will I Need a Retainer After Six Month Smiles Treatment?

The vast majority of patients do need to wear a retainer after Six Month Smiles treatment. Your teeth’s natural inclination will be to slide back into their original positions, even after they’ve been perfectly straightened. Retainers prevent this from happening by applying gentle pressure that encourages your pearly whites to stay in place.

There are two main types of retainers: fixed and removable. Fixed retainers are permanently attached to the area just behind your treated teeth, but rest assured, the wire used is very low-profile. After a week or so, you’ll hardly notice it. Most removable retainers are made from clear plastic and are typically worn at night while you sleep.

Will Six Month Smiles Affect My Speech?

For the first week or so after receiving your Six Month Smiles orthodontics, it might feel a little strange when you speak. After all, there are tooth-colored wires and brackets attached to your teeth! Eventually, though, you’ll get used to talking with your Six Month Smiles and will be able to enunciate clearly.

If you continue to have difficulties with speech after the one-week mark, please let us know. Though uncommon, it is possible that your orthodontics need to be readjusted to better fit your smile.
